The long hot days of summer are upon us. With temperatures often skyrocketing above 90, and the sun blazing down on your garden, it will need water—not too much and not too little, but just enough. Hand watering with a hose or watering can takes a lot of time. If you do it twice a day, early morning and in the evening, you’ll use a lot of time that you won’t have with family and work. Irrigation systems have timers that you can preset for daily or weekly watering. You’ll no longer need to monitor the watering because the timer shuts the water off when watering is complete. Prevents Disease and Weeds
Irrigation systems direct water right where it needs to go, to each plant’s root ball, rather than sprinkling the entire garden. This prevents surrounding weed seeds from germinating. Less weeding for you! Watering only the roots will also prevent leaf diseases that can happen when drops of water stand on the foliage. Because the water does not strike the leaves or flowers, blight diseases have no chance to start.
Preserves Soil Structure and Nutrients
Watering with a wide-open garden hose can sometimes allow too much water to seep into the soil. Because of this, nutrients leach out with the water runoff. This leaves fewer nutrients for the plants. Watering with a hose also leaves the soil compacted. Plants can wither or develop root disease with suffocating, compacted soil. Irrigation systems produce smaller droplets, which preserves nutrients and reduces soil compaction.
