Combine a family that wanted an outdoor entertaining area and room for their growing family with a very narrow yard, and you could have a pretty perplexing problem. We were able to satisfy all of this client’s needs, turning what was a fairly overgrown yard into an outdoor haven with a variety of uses.

The client want usable space for cooking, dining, entertaining, and a play area for their children, so every inch of the 13-foot wide yard counted. We designed the yard into different sections with steps separating each area, giving the yard the illusion of space.

We placed the barbecue right outside the door, as that allowed the client to easily go back and forth between the kitchen and the barbecue. The next step was the deck, which includes a fire pit. We constructed the deck out of Ipe, a nonflammable material. This is necessary to adhere to building code.

Finally, the back of the yard features the children’s play area. While it contains toys for younger kids right now, it can grow with the family, turning into an area for teens to escape to or used for additional entertaining space.

At Hufnagel Landscape Design and Construction Group, we complete our initial design drawings based on clients’ needs and budgetary constraints. We take into account the shape of the space, the slope, how much sun and shade the yard gets, what plants will grow well under the yard’s conditions, and all applicable building codes. We work with electricians, plumbers, and other professionals to be sure that your yard turns out better than you imagined.
